Tell us a bit about yourself and how you got into planning and then architecture.
I was always interested in art, design, and the built environment, and originally wanted to study architecture at university. I didn’t know much about the profession and was put off by rumours of long hours and low pay, and so chose to study planning instead.
It was only after working as a planner for a few years that I decided to eventually retrain as an architect; this is one of the reasons I’m so passionate about promoting multiple forms of entry into the profession as a way of improving diversity across the industry.
What’s it been like for you living with a young family in Peckham?
We have lived between Camberwell and Peckham for almost 10 years and absolutely love it. The area is blessed with lots of amazing amenities, parks, and vibrant high streets. I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else.
How have you found the walk and talk sessions with local people so far?
It’s been fascinating to understand more about people’s views on what they like and dislike about the local area, and especially what they believe makes Peckham special.
What are you working on currently?
We are preparing a series of diagrams and maps that try to capture the High Street’s ‘ecosystem’ – where different businesses and types of activity are located – with the hope that we can use this information to help calibrate the ground floor of our emerging proposals.
Is there anything you’d highlight about the character of Peckham, from your work so far?
The word ‘intensity’ comes to mind. Rye Lane has so much energy, with lots of different uses, business, and user groups all coexisting in a range of buildings and spaces. We’re looking forward to working closely with Tree Shepherd – who manage the Peckham Business Forum – to engage and work collaboratively with local businesses and traders.
